Does Baidu Maps Work Outside China? (Tested in 2026)
Posted on April 11, 2026 by CSK Team
Short answer: yes, the app launches, but no, it's not useful. Baidu Maps technically works in any country with internet, but it's essentially a navigation app for China with a bare-bones world map bolted on. This guide tests what actually works in April 2026 and what doesn't.
TL;DR: The Matrix
| Country | Search works? | Navigation works? | POIs accurate? | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| USA | Partial | β No | Very poor | Unusable |
| Japan | Some | β No | Poor | Unusable |
| South Korea | Some | β No | Poor | Unusable |
| Thailand | Some | β No | Poor | Unusable |
| Singapore | Basic | β No | Poor | Unusable |
| Hong Kong | β Yes | β Yes (degraded) | β Good | Usable |
| Macau | β Yes | β Yes (degraded) | β Good | Usable |
| Taiwan | Partial | Partial | Fair | Limited |
Only Hong Kong, Macau, and partially Taiwan have real Baidu Maps coverage. Everywhere else, you're looking at a decorative world map.
What Actually Works Outside China
1. The App Launches and Loads
Baidu Maps opens normally in any country with internet. You don't need a VPN to open it. However:
- The base map is licensed from HERE Maps or OpenStreetMap (varies by region)
- POI data outside China is extremely thin
- Street names are in Chinese or Romanized Chinese, not local languages
2. Basic Search (Very Limited)
If you search for a major landmark β "Times Square," "Eiffel Tower," "Shibuya" β you might get a pin. But:
- Smaller businesses won't appear
- Reviews and hours are missing
- Phone numbers don't exist
- The "click to call" feature fails
3. Hong Kong & Macau (Surprisingly Good)
Because Baidu treats HK/Macau as "Greater China," these regions have:
- Full POI coverage
- Working driving directions
- MTR / light rail integration
- Chinese labels + some English
If you're using Baidu for a China trip that includes HK stopovers, it's fine for HK too.
4. Your Saved Locations (From China)
Everything you saved while in China β starred restaurants, home address, work address β persists when you leave. You can browse them, see photos, see reviews. But you can't get directions from outside China to them (and why would you want to?).
What Doesn't Work Outside China
1. Navigation
The single biggest gap. Enter a destination in New York, Paris, or Bangkok, and Baidu Maps will:
- Draw a straight line across the ocean
- Estimate 0 minutes of travel
- Or simply fail to calculate a route
Driving, walking, transit, cycling β none of it works outside China + HK/Macau.
2. Real-time Traffic
No traffic data outside China. At all. The traffic layer in the app is greyed out when you're abroad.
3. Transit Routes
No subway, bus, or train data outside China. Even for cities with extensive public transit like Tokyo or London.

4. Business Information
POI database is 95% Chinese businesses. In Tokyo's Shibuya, Baidu Maps might show 20 POIs where Google Maps shows 500.
5. Street View
Baidu Street View exists only in China + HK/Macau. Everywhere else β nothing.
6. Ride-hailing Integration
In China, Baidu Maps integrates with Didi. Outside China, that integration doesn't work β no Uber, Lyft, Grab, or local taxi app connections.
Why Baidu Maps Doesn't Work Abroad
Baidu Maps is a domestic Chinese product. Baidu (the parent company) made a business decision to focus purely on China, where they compete with Amap and Tencent Maps. Building global coverage would require:
- Licensing mapping data from providers like TomTom, HERE, or OpenStreetMap (expensive)
- Local POI teams in every country
- Language localization into 20+ languages
- Real-time traffic agreements with municipalities
Baidu never made that investment. Instead, they added a bare-bones "world map" feature in 2015 and essentially froze development on it. It exists mostly for Chinese tourists who want to see "where am I in the world" when traveling abroad β not for actual navigation.
Can I Use Baidu Maps From the US to Search a Chinese Address?
Yes β and this is actually a great use case.
If you're planning a China trip from abroad, Baidu Maps works for:
- β Searching Chinese restaurants, hotels, and attractions
- β Reading reviews (in Chinese)
- β Saving locations for offline use later
- β Comparing distances between your hotel and points of interest in China
The app doesn't geo-block based on your location. You can plan your China trip from New York, then sync everything when you land in Shanghai.
Pro tip: Create a free Baidu account before the trip, save locations while abroad, and they'll all sync to your phone when you arrive in China.
What to Use Instead (By Country)
Outside China, Use:
| Country | Best map |
|---|---|
| USA | Google Maps, Apple Maps |
| Europe | Google Maps, Apple Maps, Citymapper (transit) |
| Japan | Google Maps, Apple Maps, Yahoo! ε°ε³ (local) |
| South Korea | Kakao Map, Naver Map (Google is incomplete here) |
| Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines | Google Maps |
| Singapore | Google Maps, Citymapper |
| Indonesia, Malaysia | Google Maps, Grab (for transport) |
| Hong Kong / Macau | Google Maps OR Baidu Maps (both work) |
| Taiwan | Google Maps (Baidu has partial data but avoid it) |
In China, Use:
- Amap (Gaode) β best overall, cleanest English mode
- Baidu Maps β backup, better for walking directions with landmarks
- Apple Maps β acceptable if you're on iPhone (uses Amap data)
- Tencent Maps β via WeChat Mini Programs and location sharing

The Bottom Line
Baidu Maps does not work outside China in any practical sense. The app launches, the base map loads, but navigation fails, POIs are missing, and there's no transit data. For any trip outside mainland China + HK/Macau, use Google Maps.
But Baidu Maps is still useful abroad for one thing: pre-trip research. You can browse China from anywhere in the world, save locations, and have them ready when you land. That's a legitimate workflow β just don't expect it to navigate you around Tokyo or New York.
