Everything You Need to Know About the 240-Hour Transit
What is the 240-Hour Policy?
Replacing the old 72/144-hour policy, eligible travelers from 57 countries (Kyrgyzstan and Vietnam added on August 20, 2026) can now enter China visa-free for up to 10 days (240 hours). You can enter through any of the 65 designated ports across 24 provincial-level regions.
The "A → B → C" Rule
To qualify, you must be in transit to a third country or region.
Valid: USA (A) → Shanghai (B) → Japan (C).
Valid: USA (A) → China (B) → Hong Kong/Macau (C).
Invalid: USA (A) → Shanghai (B) → USA (A) (Round Trip).
Required Documents
- Passport valid for at least 3 months.
- Confirmed onward ticket (seat booked) to a third country/region within 240 hours.
- Visa for the third country (if required).
Important Rules
- Time Limit: The 240-hour clock starts at 00:00 on the day after you arrive.
- Stay Area: You must stay within the permitted regions of the 24 participating provinces, but you can travel between them (e.g., enter in Shanghai and continue to Beijing). Some regions, such as Tibet and Xinjiang, are not covered.
- Registration: If not staying in a hotel, you must register with the police within 24 hours of arrival.
