How to Change Baidu Maps to English: Step-by-Step 2026 Guide
Posted on May 22, 2026 by CSK Team
If you opened Baidu Maps (็พๅบฆๅฐๅพ) hoping for an "English" toggle in the settings, you've already noticed the truth: there isn't one โ at least not a reliable one. Baidu removed the standalone language setting a few app versions ago, and the partial English mode they shipped in 2025 covers Beijing first, with other cities rolling out slowly.
The good news: there are 5 working methods to make Baidu Maps usable as a non-Chinese speaker. The trade-offs are different for each, and which one you pick depends on whether you're on iPhone or Android, whether you have a VPN, and how much of the Chinese UI you're willing to memorize.
This is the no-fluff 2026 walkthrough. If you decide partway through that this is too much hassle, skip to Method 5 โ switching to Amap is usually the better answer.

What Happened to Baidu's English Mode?
Quick context so you stop hunting for a setting that isn't there:
- Before 2023: Baidu Maps had a
่ฏญ่จ่ฎพ็ฝฎ(Language Settings) submenu with English/Chinese options. Coverage was spotty but it existed. - 2023โ2024: Baidu silently removed the toggle from most app versions.
- March 2025: Baidu announced an English map mode, starting with Beijing, accessible by tapping a globe icon in the top-right of the map. Beijing place names show in English, but the menus, search, and navigation prompts remain in Chinese.
- 2026 status: English map mode has expanded to Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chengdu, and Hangzhou (partial). Other cities still show Chinese-only place labels.
So if you came looking for a button: it exists, but only in select cities, and it only translates place labels โ not the rest of the app.
Method 1 โ Use Baidu's Built-In English Map (Beijing & Major Cities Only)
This works in Beijing reliably and in 5 other Tier-1 cities partially.
Steps
- Open Baidu Maps (็พๅบฆๅฐๅพ).
- On the main map screen, look at the top-right corner for a small globe icon (๐).
- Tap the globe. A small menu appears with
ไธญๆandEnglish. - Tap
English. The map labels โ streets, subway stations, landmarks โ switch to English/Pinyin. - The bottom menu (
้ฆ้กต,่ทฏ็บฟ,ๅจ่พน,ๆ็) stays in Chinese. See Method 2 to translate those.
What works
- Street and subway names in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen
- Major landmark labels (Forbidden City, Bund, etc.)
- Pinyin transliteration where no official English exists
What doesn't
- Smaller cities (the globe icon is missing or doesn't activate)
- The search box, settings, and navigation prompts
- Reviews and place descriptions
- Restaurant names (these often stay Chinese)
Method 2 โ Use Your Phone's Screen Translator (Works Everywhere)
This is the closest thing to a "make the whole app English" button. Modern phones have native screen translation built in โ no extra app needed for most.
iPhone (iOS 18+)
- Open Baidu Maps.
- Long-press the bottom-left or right corner of the screen โ activates Live Text/Screen Translation, or tap the AI/Translate icon if you've added it to Control Center.
- Alternative: open Control Center โ tap Live Translate โ select Chinese to English.
- The Chinese menu items overlay in English in real-time.
If your iOS version doesn't have native screen translation, use this fallback:
- Take a screenshot of the Baidu Maps screen.
- Open Photos โ tap Live Text (the icon in the corner of the photo).
- Tap Translate.
- Read the English translation, then switch back to Baidu Maps.
Android (One UI / MIUI / HyperOS / Pixel)
The best built-in feature is Circle to Search (Pixel, Samsung) or HyperOS Translate (Xiaomi).
- Open Baidu Maps.
- Long-press the home button (or the gesture-bar pill).
- Circle to Search activates. Draw a circle around any Chinese text.
- Translation appears in a popup.
For older Android, install Google Translate (you'll need a VPN for it to download in China โ see Method 3) and use its "Tap to Translate" overlay feature.
Why this is the most reliable method
It doesn't depend on Baidu shipping English support. You translate whatever's on screen, in any city, in any menu. The downside is you're translating each screen individually rather than getting a permanent English UI.
Method 3 โ Set Your Phone System Language to English First
Some app menus respect the system language. This sometimes (not always) coaxes Baidu Maps into showing a partial English interface.
Steps
- Go to Settings โ General (iOS) or System (Android) โ Language & Region.
- Set iPhone Language / System language to English.
- Restart the phone.
- Uninstall and reinstall Baidu Maps (this is the critical step โ installed apps cache the original language at install time).
- Open Baidu Maps. Some labels and menus may now appear in English.
Honest expectation
This method gives mixed results. On some app versions, you'll see ~30% of the UI in English. On others, nothing changes. It's worth trying once before falling back to Methods 1, 2, or 5.

Method 4 โ Memorize the 8 Buttons You Actually Need
If you only need Baidu Maps for navigation, you don't need to translate the whole app โ you need to recognize 8 buttons.

Search in Pinyin
You don't need to type Chinese characters. Baidu Maps search accepts Pinyin (romanized Chinese):
Tiananmenโ ๅคฉๅฎ้จBeijing Nan Zhanโ ๅไบฌๅ็ซ (Beijing South Railway Station)Starbucksโ ๆๅทดๅ KFCโ ่ฏๅพทๅบ- Hotel names โ type the English brand name (Hilton, Marriott, etc.) โ usually works
For tricky cases, paste the Chinese name from your hotel booking confirmation directly into the search box.
Method 5 โ Switch to Amap (Gaode ้ซๅพท) Instead
If you've read this far and the answer keeps being "you'll have to fight the Chinese UI," the honest answer is: don't fight it.
Amap (้ซๅพทๅฐๅพ, Gaode) is Baidu's main competitor and has significantly better English support in 2026:
| Feature | Baidu Maps | Amap (Gaode) |
|---|---|---|
| Built-in English UI | Beijing + 5 partial | โ Most major cities |
| English navigation voice | โ | โ |
| English search results | Partial (Pinyin) | โ Full |
| English menus | โ | โ (most) |
| Offline maps | โ | โ |
| Public transit accuracy | Slightly better | Comparable |
| Taxi/Didi integration | โ | โ |
For most foreign travelers, Amap is the right default. Baidu is worth keeping as a backup for:
- Beijing-only navigation (where Baidu has slightly better street-level detail)
- Indoor maps (Baidu has stronger mall and airport interior coverage)
- Place reviews in Chinese contexts (Baidu has older review history)
See our full setup walkthrough: Amap (Gaode) English Guide 2026.
What About Apple Maps?
Apple Maps in China runs on AutoNavi/Gaode data (the same backend as Amap) and works decently for major cities. The interface is fully English, no setup required. Limitations:
- Restaurant reviews are sparse compared to Dianping
- Public transit routing in smaller cities can be incomplete
- Real-time traffic is less granular than Baidu/Amap
For a typical 7โ14 day trip to Beijing, Shanghai, Xi'an, or other Tier-1 cities, Apple Maps + Dianping is often enough. See Apple Maps in China 2026 for the full review.
Common Problems
"I tapped the globe icon and nothing happened"
You're in a city where Baidu's English mode hasn't rolled out yet. Use Method 2 (screen translator) or switch to Amap.
"The English place names are weird Pinyin"
Baidu's English mode transliterates rather than translates for places without official English names. ๅไบฌ่ฅฟ็ซ becomes Beijing Xizhan rather than Beijing West Railway Station. This is consistent across the app โ once you learn that "Zhan" = station, "Lu" = road, "Jie" = street, the names become readable.
"Search results are all in Chinese even after switching"
Search results are tied to Baidu's database, not the UI language. Use Pinyin keywords (KFC, Starbucks, Hilton) or paste Chinese names from your hotel confirmation.
"Navigation voice prompts are in Chinese"
Baidu doesn't have an English navigation voice in 2026. If you need spoken directions in English, use Amap or Apple Maps.
"I downloaded Baidu Maps but it crashes on launch outside China"
This is a known issue with the Baidu app outside mainland China. See Does Baidu Maps Work Outside China? โ short answer: limited functionality, and only certain versions work.
Quick Decision Tree
You need a map in China and:
โโ Only going to Beijing โ Method 1 (built-in English mode)
โโ Going to multiple cities โ Method 5 (switch to Amap)
โโ Already on the ground without a VPN โ Method 2 (screen translator)

Final Word
If you're determined to use Baidu Maps as a non-Chinese speaker in 2026, combine Methods 1, 2, and 4: tap the globe icon if available, use your phone's screen translator for menus, and memorize the 8 Chinese buttons that actually matter. That gets you 80% of the way there.
But the honest recommendation hasn't changed: for most travelers, Amap (Gaode) is the better choice. Baidu Maps has stronger Beijing-specific data, but Amap has stronger English support, and for visitors, the second one matters more.
Test both before you go โ install during your layover or in your hotel's first night. The one that "just works" for your itinerary is the one to keep on your home screen.
