How to Make a Reservation on Dianping (English Step-by-Step 2026)

Posted on April 11, 2026 by CSK Team

Dianping isn't just reviews — it's China's largest restaurant reservation system, with 15+ million bookable businesses. The problem: the booking flow is all in Chinese, and if you tap the wrong button, you might accidentally buy a prepaid voucher instead of reserving a table.

This guide walks you through the exact 7 taps to book a table, including which Chinese characters to look for.

Before You Start: Two Prerequisites

  1. You need to be logged in. Guest users can't book. See our Dianping without a Chinese phone number guide for the WeChat login workaround.
  2. Not every restaurant accepts reservations. About 60% of listed restaurants have a "预订" (reservation) button; the rest are walk-in only. You'll know within 3 taps whether booking is possible.

The 7-Step Booking Flow

Step 1: Find Your Restaurant

  1. Open Dianping
  2. Tap the search bar (magnifying glass icon, top center)
  3. Either type the restaurant name in English or Chinese, or
  4. Tap 附近 (Nearby) to browse by location

Dianping's search is smart — it accepts English names for most famous chains (e.g., "Din Tai Fung" works).

Step 2: Open the Restaurant Page

Tap the restaurant card. You'll land on the restaurant's main page, which has these sections from top to bottom:

SectionChinese labelWhat's there
Header(none)Photo, name, 4.x rating, price tier (¥¥, ¥¥¥)
Deals团购 / 代金券Prepaid vouchers (DO NOT tap here by mistake)
Menu菜单 / 推荐菜Menu and "must-order" dishes
Reviews评价Customer reviews with photos
Reservation订座 / 预订⭐ This is the button you want
Info商家信息Address, phone, hours

Step 3: Find the Reservation Button

Scroll down until you see a button labeled:

  • 订座 (book a table) — most common
  • 预订 (reserve) — sometimes
  • 在线订座 (book online) — on newer listings

If you see none of these → the restaurant doesn't accept Dianping reservations. Scroll to 商家信息 and call the phone number directly, or just walk in.

Warning: Don't confuse 订座 (table reservation) with 团购 (group-buy coupon). 团购 is a prepaid meal voucher — you pay upfront for a specific menu. Unless you want a fixed set menu at a discount, skip 团购 and use 订座.

Step 4: Choose Date & Time

A booking form opens with these fields:

FieldChineseWhat to pick
Date日期Tap → calendar → pick your date
Time时间Tap → time slots → pick your slot
Guests人数Number of diners (1-20 usually)
Room type包间 / 大厅大厅 = dining hall (free), 包间 = private room (often ¥200+ min spend)

Pro tip: Popular restaurants fill up days in advance on weekends. Book 3-7 days ahead for Friday/Saturday dinner in tier-1 cities.

Step 5: Add Contact Info

You'll need to enter:

  • 姓名 (name): Use your last name in pinyin (e.g., "SMITH") — the host will look for this
  • 电话 (phone): Your Chinese SIM number (or WeChat-linked number if using WeChat login)
  • 备注 (notes): Optional — "window seat" (靠窗), "quiet area" (安静), "English menu" (英文菜单)

Critical: If you enter a non-Chinese phone number, the restaurant can't call you to confirm or reach you if they need to reschedule. This is the #1 reason foreign bookings get canceled. Always use a +86 number.

Step 6: Confirm & Submit

Tap the bottom button:

  • 提交预订 (submit reservation) or
  • 立即预订 (book now)

You'll see a confirmation screen with:

  • ✅ 预订成功 (booking successful) — you're done
  • ⏳ 等待商家确认 (waiting for restaurant confirmation) — not done yet; you'll get a push notification within 1-24 hours

Step 7: Wait for Confirmation (and SMS/Call)

Most reservations are provisional until the restaurant confirms. You'll receive:

  • A push notification in Dianping
  • Sometimes an SMS to the +86 number
  • Occasionally a direct phone call from the restaurant (in Chinese — see below)

If the restaurant calls you:

  • Don't panic — they usually just want to confirm the party size and time
  • Say "你好, 我预订了 X 点 Y 位, 对吗?" ("Hi, I booked for X o'clock for Y people, right?")
  • If your Chinese isn't there yet, hand the phone to any Chinese speaker — the call is usually under 30 seconds

Common Mistakes (and Fixes)

Mistake 1: Accidentally Buying a 团购 Voucher

Symptom: You paid ¥200 and received a QR code, but you're not sure if you have a reservation.

What happened: You bought a group-buy voucher, which reserves the discounted meal, not the table. You now need to go back and separately tap 订座 to actually reserve a seat. Bring the QR code to the restaurant and show it at check-in.

Fix: Next time, look for 订座 first, then only buy 团购 if you want the discount on top.

Mistake 2: Booking for the Wrong Day

Symptom: Dianping shows today's date as default. If you tap "time" without changing date, you book for today.

Fix: Always check the date field first. In Chinese, the format is 月/日 (month/day).

Mistake 3: Restaurant Rejects Booking Without Telling You

Symptom: You arrive, they say "no reservation on file."

Why this happens: Some small restaurants use Dianping's booking system but forget to check it. The reservation exists in the app but not at the restaurant.

Prevention: Take a screenshot of the confirmation page and show it at the host stand. Also, if the restaurant number is listed, consider calling to re-confirm the morning of your reservation.

Mistake 4: Booking a Private Room by Accident

Symptom: You show up and the host takes you to a closed-off room — then bills you a ¥300 minimum.

What happened: You picked 包间 (private room) instead of 大厅 (dining hall) in Step 4. Many private rooms have a minimum spend.

Fix: In Step 4, always tap 大厅 unless you specifically want privacy.

What Dianping Reservations Don't Do

  • ❌ They don't guarantee a walk-in table time. If you book 7pm and arrive at 7pm, you may still wait 10-15 minutes
  • ❌ They don't work at every restaurant. Some high-end places require WeChat-based bookings, not Dianping
  • ❌ They don't allow modification. To change the time, cancel (取消) and rebook
  • ❌ They don't include deposit refund flexibility. Some premium restaurants charge a no-show fee — read the fine print during booking

Can I Book Without the App?

Yes, two ways:

WeChat Mini Program

Search 大众点评 in WeChat's Mini Program search → same booking flow, slightly less featured. Good if you don't want to install the full app.

Dianping Website

dianping.com exists but is effectively unusable for bookings (old interface, login-gated, no English). Skip it — use the app or WeChat Mini Program instead.

The Honest Bottom Line

Dianping reservations work well for restaurants that take them. The tricky part isn't the booking itself — it's (a) not accidentally buying a voucher instead of a table, and (b) having a Chinese phone number for confirmation.

If you have a +86 SIM and a WeChat-linked Dianping account, you can book any of 9 million+ reservable restaurants in China in under a minute. That's genuinely powerful, and no other app comes close.
