Dianping on iPhone: Download & Setup Guide for Foreigners (2026)
Posted on April 11, 2026 by CSK Team
If you search "Dianping" on the US App Store, you get... nothing useful. No official app. Maybe a few fan-made knockoffs. The real Dianping (倧δΌηΉθ―) is only on the Chinese App Store, which means foreign iPhone users have to work around a regional restriction before they can even start using it.
This guide shows you the three legitimate ways to get Dianping on an iPhone in 2026 β and the iOS-specific setup tricks that make a huge difference.
Why Dianping Is Missing From the US App Store
Dianping's parent company (Meituan) only publishes the app to the Chinese App Store. They chose not to distribute internationally for three reasons:
- Legal compliance: Chinese consumer apps have to follow China-specific data regulations (real-name system, content review, etc.) that conflict with Apple's international App Store policies
- No incentive: 99%+ of users are in mainland China, so building international distribution isn't worth the effort
- Regional ad/payment tie-ins: Dianping's revenue model depends on Chinese payment integration (Alipay, WeChat Pay) that doesn't translate outside China
Result: you can't find it, and even if you sideload it, certain features expect a Chinese account context.
Method 1: Change App Store Region to China
The "official" method. Works but has trade-offs.
Steps
- Open Settings β Your Name (top) β Media & Purchases
- Tap View Account
- Tap Country/Region β Change Country or Region
- Select China Mainland
- Accept terms (will be in Chinese; tap the blue confirm button at the bottom right)
- β οΈ Problem: Apple will ask for a Chinese payment method (credit card or Alipay)
The Workaround for Payment
Change to a "None" payment option:
- Before changing region, remove all payment methods from your current account
- Spend any remaining store credit
- Cancel all subscriptions
- Then switch region β Apple will allow "None" as a payment method for free accounts
What Changes When You Switch
- β You can now download Dianping (and other Chinese apps: Meituan, Taobao, Alipay, WeChat, etc.)
- β Your entire App Store is now in Chinese (language + app catalog)
- β You lose access to US-only apps and subscriptions (Netflix US, Hulu, etc.)
- β App updates for US apps pause until you switch back
- β You can only change region once per 90 days β be sure before committing
Verdict
Works if you're going to China for 2+ months and want a fully Chinese-configured phone. Overkill for a 1-week trip.
Method 2: Create a Second Apple ID (Recommended)
This is the method most travelers end up using. You keep your primary US/EU Apple ID on your phone and add a second Chinese one just for downloading.
Steps
- On a computer (not iPhone), go to appleid.apple.com β Create Your Apple ID
- When asked for country, select China Mainland
- Use a new email (not your primary one) β Gmail, Outlook, Proton, whatever
- For the address, use any real Chinese address you can find online (hotel, landmark, co-working space β the address doesn't get validated)
- For the phone number: if you don't have a +86 number yet, skip this step or use a Chinese friend's number
- Set payment to None (this is critical β don't enter any card)
- Verify via email β done
Using Both Apple IDs on iPhone
- On iPhone, open App Store
- Tap your profile icon (top right)
- Scroll down β Sign Out
- Sign in with your Chinese Apple ID
- Search "倧δΌηΉθ―" (Dianping) β download
- After downloading, sign out and sign back in with your primary Apple ID
Your downloaded Dianping app stays on the phone. You only need to re-sign-in to the Chinese ID when you want to update Dianping or download other Chinese apps.
Verdict
Best method for 90% of travelers. Clean, reversible, doesn't affect your primary account. Use this unless you have a specific reason not to.
Method 3: TestFlight / Beta Builds
Occasionally, developers publish Dianping-adjacent apps via TestFlight with a public link. But the official Dianping app has never been on TestFlight, and third-party beta links are usually malware. Don't use this method for Dianping.
iOS-Specific Setup Tricks (Post-Install)
Once Dianping is installed, iOS has a few features that make it dramatically more usable than Android.
Trick 1: Enable Live Translation on Lock Screen Widget
- Settings β General β Language & Region β Add Language β Chinese (Simplified)
- Settings β Translate β Download "Chinese Simplified" for on-device mode
- Now when you're browsing Dianping, use Live Text: long-press any Chinese text to translate it instantly

Trick 2: Use Visual Look Up for Menus
On any menu photo in Dianping:
- Take a screenshot
- Open the screenshot
- Tap any Chinese dish name β iOS will offer to translate it via Apple Translate
Trick 3: Siri Shortcut for Quick Translation
Create a Siri Shortcut that takes a screenshot + runs it through OCR + translates:
- Open Shortcuts app β + β Add actions: "Take Screenshot" β "Extract Text" β "Translate Text" β "Show Result"
- Name it "Translate Screen"
- Trigger with "Hey Siri, translate screen" while on any Dianping page
Trick 4: Use Notes App's "Scan Document" for Paper Menus
If you're handed a physical Chinese menu in a Dianping-listed restaurant:
- Open Notes β + β Scan Documents
- Scan the menu
- Tap the scan β select text β translate
This is 3x faster than typing the dish names into Google Translate.
Trick 5: Enable Control Center Translation
In iOS 18+:
- Settings β Control Center β Add Translate
- Now you have a swipe-down shortcut for instant translation
Common iOS Setup Problems
"The app crashes on first launch"
Usually caused by:
- iOS region mismatch: If your Apple ID is Chinese but your iPhone region is set to US, some Dianping features fail. Either align them, or use the app in "guest" mode
- Missing Chinese keyboard: Settings β General β Keyboard β Add Chinese (Simplified) β Dianping's search can fail without it installed
"Notifications don't work"
Dianping's notifications use UMeng (a Chinese push service) that's not always fully compatible with Apple's APNS in Hong Kong / Singapore. Workaround: enable email notifications in-app settings instead.
"I can't sign in with my Apple ID"
Dianping's "Sign in with Apple" option requires a Chinese Apple ID. Use the WeChat login method instead (our Dianping without a Chinese phone number guide covers this).
"Maps inside Dianping are broken"
iOS's built-in maps use Apple's data (which uses Amap data in China β good). But Dianping's embedded map uses Tencent Maps. If you tap "directions" from inside Dianping, it tries to open Tencent Maps β which you probably don't have installed. Fix: in iOS Settings β Dianping β set default map app to Apple Maps.
Dianping App vs Dianping WeChat Mini Program on iPhone
If all of this sounds like too much, skip the app entirely and use the WeChat Mini Program.
Mini Program advantages
- β No App Store region change needed
- β Login automatically via your WeChat account
- β 70% of the full app's features
- β Built-in WeChat translation (long-press β Translate)
- β Smaller footprint (no separate app)
Mini Program limitations
- β Some advanced features missing (user-to-user messages, photo reviews)
- β Slower to load than the native app
- β Only works inside WeChat
If you're a casual user: Mini Program is better. If you're a power user staying 30+ days: Native app is worth the setup.
The Bottom Line
On iPhone, the best path to Dianping is:
- Create a second Chinese Apple ID (without payment) on your computer
- Sign into it on your iPhone, download Dianping, sign back into your primary ID
- Enable iOS Live Text + Translate for menus and reviews
- Use WeChat login inside Dianping to skip the phone number requirement
Total setup time: ~15 minutes. After that, Dianping works on your iPhone as well as it does on any Chinese user's phone β the UI is still Chinese, but iOS's translation features make it dramatically more navigable than on Android.
