Can I Access Online Banking in China? What's Blocked
Posted on December 8, 2025 by CSK Team
Most online banking worksβbut with caveats. Bank websites aren't specifically blocked, but some features and connections may be affected.
What Works
Direct Bank Websites
Most major bank websites function:
- Chase
- Bank of America
- Wells Fargo
- Citibank
- UK banks (Barclays, HSBC, etc.)
- Most credit unions
However: Some security features may cause issues.
Banking Apps
Mobile apps generally work:
- Same functionality as home
- May be slower
- Biometric login works
Potential Issues
Two-Factor Authentication
SMS codes:
- Should still arrive
- May be delayed
- International roaming must work
- Verify your number receives texts in China
App-based authentication:
- Google Authenticator: Works offline
- Microsoft Authenticator: Works
- Bank-specific apps: Usually work
Google-Related
If your bank uses Google services:
- Google reCAPTCHA may fail
- Some security checks blocked
- VPN usually solves this
VPN Complications
Using VPN:
- Bank may see "unusual location"
- Could trigger security alerts
- May lock your account temporarily
- Login from "VPN country" then China looks suspicious
Recommendation: Use banking without VPN first. Add VPN only if blocked.
Before Your Trip
